Round Kyuusu A
made by Shimojo Akira
No Glaze Round Kyuusu Side Handle
This green tea teapot (Kyuusu) is made from a mixture of clay from Toride City, Ibaraki Prefecture, and Arakida clay from Saitama Prefecture. The Toride clay is hand harvested and both are hand processed to create a workable material from scratch.
These teapots are fired in a wood-fired kiln built by Shimojo himself on the grounds of the Toride campus. Kyuusu teapots are traditionally made from high iron clays such as these and are left unglazed to allow contact between the clay body and the tea. This contact is said to enhance the flavour of the tea.
