  • During the late Edo period in Japan, Imari ceramics rose to prominence as a distinguished and sought-after art form. Originating from the town of Arita in Saga Prefecture, Imari ware became synonymous with exquisite craftsmanship and intricate design. Characterised by their vibrant cobalt blue underglaze and lavish overglaze enamels, Imari pieces reflected the influence of both Chinese and Dutch aesthetics. The late Edo period witnessed the flowering of Imari's intricate and often elaborate designs, depicting flora, fauna and mythical motifs. These ceramics became popular not only in Japan but also among the European aristocracy, contributing to the export trade and earning the name 'Imari ware' internationally. The late Edo period is considered a golden age for Imari ceramics, demonstrating the mastery of the craftsmen in combining tradition and innovation, and leaving a lasting legacy in the world of porcelain art.

It is easy to see that this particular piece is neither lavish nor intricate. Yet it retains the spirit of Imari ware, the blue and red underglaze and the depiction of nature. It is possible that this was made by a hobbyist at the time, or as a cheap product for the common people, rather than to be sold abroad.

  • As with any antique, this piece should be treated with care to preserve its history. This is not to say that it is not to be used, but you should avoid putting it in the dishwasher or microwave to prolong its life. We recommend hand washing with a mild detergent and drying after each use.
